Great job but subpar city.

I recently moved to the buyside (SFO), a great investment team with strong backgrounds, fair compensation, good upside potential and good WLB as well.

The only issue, is the city. I graduated from uni 4 years ago and have lived in London and other major European cities. While the SFO is still located in a major city there is a significant downgrade in terms of offers the city has to offer.

It's like moving from new york to Milwaukee. Sure money is good and it's close to my parents, but damn does the lack of career oriented people I can hang out with in rooftop bars suck. People I hang out with now are often blue collar workers who I knew from high school in cheap bars vs ex finance buddies in bars in London or major cont. European cities. Upside is girls are much easier there, however there looking for husband's while I will only turn 27 in a few days

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and suggestions regarding your situation in San Francisco (SFO):

Pros of Living in San Francisco:

  1. Great Investment Team: You mentioned having a strong investment team with good backgrounds, fair compensation, and good work-life balance (WLB). This is a significant advantage and can be a solid foundation for your career growth.
  2. Proximity to Nature: San Francisco offers excellent access to nature, including hiking, beaches, and skiing. This can be a great way to balance your work life with outdoor activities.
  3. Food Scene: The city has a vibrant food scene with diverse culinary options.
  4. Easier Social Scene: You noted that socializing, especially with women, is easier in San Francisco compared to other major cities.

Cons of Living in San Francisco:

  1. Downgrade in City Offerings: Compared to London and other major European cities, San Francisco might feel like a downgrade in terms of cultural and social offerings.
  2. Lack of Career-Oriented Social Circles: You miss the career-oriented social circles and the vibrant rooftop bar scene that you experienced in London and other European cities.
  3. Social Scene: The social scene might feel less sophisticated, with more blue-collar workers and fewer finance professionals.

Suggestions to Improve Your Experience:

  1. Explore Different Neighborhoods: Consider living in areas like North Beach, Russian Hill, Marina, or Pac Heights. These neighborhoods are known for their cleanliness, quality of life, and proximity to the financial district.
  2. Engage in Networking Events: Look for networking events and professional meetups in the city to connect with like-minded, career-oriented individuals.
  3. Leverage the Tech Scene: San Francisco is a hub for tech and innovation. Engaging with the tech community might provide new opportunities for socializing and professional growth.
  4. Utilize the City's Offerings: Take advantage of the city's unique offerings, such as its proximity to vacation spots like Lake Tahoe, LA, San Diego, and Hawaii. This can provide a refreshing break from the city's routine.
  5. Balance Social Life: While the social scene might be different, try to find a balance between enjoying the laid-back lifestyle and seeking out more sophisticated social settings.

Conclusion:

While San Francisco might not offer the same social and cultural vibrancy as London or other major European cities, it has its own unique advantages. By exploring different neighborhoods, engaging in networking events, and leveraging the city's tech scene, you can enhance your experience and find a balance that works for you.
