McLaren P1 hypercar worth over $1M is washed from Florida garage by floodwater from Hurricane Ian

I saw this dude’s garage. He left a P1 and a Rolls Royce next to each other and just left them to float away. I don’t understand why people don’t evacuate or ship exotic cars before the storm hits.

Next to impossible to arrange car shipping on ~2-3 days notice on normal terms, let alone in a hurricane situation. Yeah guess he could have driven it away, but the cone was so wide and the track so fast-changing that even northern FL was expected to take a big hit early on... he'd have to have driven it well into Georgia (~12-15 hour drive, plus 5-10 more hours of evacuation traffic) to be fully safe. Looks like he had a bunch of cars so not much to do there, can't evacuate them all. Not sure why the guy stayed, but whatever.

At the end of the day it's just a car and it's both replaceable and insured

Couldn’t he have just driven it to the closest multi level garage? That’s what I would have done at least for the P1. The Rolls Royce seems much easier to replace.

Actually, it's not really replaceable. There aren't that many floating around. Yeah it's insured which is nice, but usually at the price you paid not what it's worth. Sucks for a lot of collectors who run into this with everything from cars to watches to art. You can purchase insurance that covers market value, but it's usually very very pricey

Not to be rude, but “Georgia is 12 hours away so no point” is a terrible take. There are literally countless exotic car services in Florida (especially Naples) that could have offered safe storage for the storm that would have required literally an hour of heads up. This guy’s house was maybe ~100ft from the sea at ocean level - he’s a complete moron for keeping that car (which he bought for > $1.5mm two weeks prior) sitting there. It would have taken zero effort to call the McLaren dealership and get sorted with safe storage. Feels like he was trying to commit insurance fraud with how brain dead this is + the fact he just bought it.

MAYBE HE HAD TO SAVE GAMMY HUH MAYBE YOU DIDNT THINK OF THAT WITH YOUR SUPERCARS YOU FUCK WHAT ABOUT GAMMY HUH YOU WANT HER STRANDED ON A ROOF EATING FUNYONS AND SHIT GODDAMN IT DO NOT LEAVE GAMMY BEHIND

Someone rich enough to own this and get on the buyer's list (assuming he's original owner) almost certainly has an umbrella insurance policy to replace it for anything like this. The man lives in FL after all.

I wonder if his insurance requires him to keep it in a specific parking situation, either an expensive exotic car focused garage or a personal one.

Given how much it would cost to fix even a minor scratch or bump, I can see insurers refusing to cover without some assurance that the car will be reasonably well stored.  Nothing screams "steal me" like a supercar, especially one kept in a mall parking garage or something
