Energy Trading Resources

Hi guys,

I've always been super interested in the energy market, started out a while ago wanting to do Energy M&A / Private Credit. Recently though, I've started to develop an interest in physical commodities trading. To be honest I've never looked at trading as a viable career path since my understanding of it was those day traders on youtube and I felt like may it wasn't the best fit for me, also I don't have a math background at all and feel like I'll be at too much of a disadvantage (I can code though; Python, C, R, SQL, etc.).

Anyways I just wanted to come on here and ask if there were any online resources I might read to help study a bit more into this topic? I'm in the middle of "Commodities Demystified" right now and I'm enjoying it so far but wondering if there are those currently in the industry who have some good resources they think might benefit a hopeful future energy trader.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Ahoy there! It sounds like you're on an exciting journey diving into the world of energy trading. It's a fascinating field, and your coding skills will definitely come in handy, especially in today's data-driven trading environment. Let's get you some resources to fuel your curiosity further.

Based on the highest ranked content on WSO and threads that have been quite helpful, here are a few resources and tips to deepen your understanding of physical commodities and energy trading:

  1. Books to Broaden Your Horizon:

    • "The King of Oil" by Daniel Ammann. You've mentioned you're currently enjoying "Commodities Demystified," and this book could be a great follow-up. It offers an insightful look into the life of Marc Rich, a legendary commodities trader. While not a technical guide, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of oil trading.
    • "The Economics of Commodity Trading Firms" by Craig Pirrong. This book dives into the economics behind the operations of commodity trading firms, offering a solid foundation for understanding the market dynamics.
  2. Online Courses and Certifications:

    • The Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) Energy Risk Professional (ERP) Program: This is a unique designation focusing on energy and is the only one of its kind globally. It covers a wide range of topics relevant to energy trading and risk management. Your coding skills could be particularly useful in the risk management aspects of the curriculum.
  3. Practical Experience:

    • Coding in Trading: Given your coding skills, explore how Python, R, and SQL can be applied in trading strategies, risk management, and data analysis. There are numerous online resources and communities dedicated to coding in finance. Quantitative analysis is a huge part of modern trading, and your skills can give you a unique edge.
  4. Networking and Forums:

    • Wall Street Oasis (WSO) Forums: You're already in the right place! Dive deeper into the forums here, especially those focused on sales and trading. Engaging with the community can provide real-world insights and advice from those currently in the industry.
  5. WSO Courses and Academy:

    • Consider exploring the WSO Academy and the courses available there. While the context doesn't specify exact courses for energy trading, the platform offers a wide range of finance-related courses that could provide valuable knowledge and skills.

Remember, transitioning into a new field like energy trading is a journey, and every bit of knowledge and skill you acquire along the way will be valuable. Your background in coding is a significant asset, and combining that with industry knowledge will make you a formidable candidate in the energy trading world. Keep exploring, learning, and connecting with others in the field. Best of luck on your trading adventure!
