Have you/someone you know moved from IBD into the sports industry?

I find myself more and more disliking what Im doing and I dont want to go for anything crazy but Id like to move industries into something Im passionate about.

Im just wondering what sort roles within the sports industry take people with a finance background.

The higher ups in suits of sports teams tend to be former lawyers that Ive noticed.

Sports jobs are almost always going to pay less (especially at the lower to mid levels) and are almost entirely dependent on networking. Still, there's something to be said for enjoying your job. Go pound the pavement in your city and see what's out there.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for individuals with a background in investment banking (IB) or private equity (PE) to transition into the sports industry. Finance professionals can bring valuable skills to sports organizations, particularly in areas such as investment management, corporate development, and strategic planning.

Here are some roles within the sports industry that often attract individuals with a finance background:

  1. Corporate Development: This involves strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, and new business initiatives. A background in IB or PE can be particularly useful here.
  2. Investment Management: Managing the investments and financial assets of the sports organization or its ownership group.
  3. Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A): Involves budgeting, forecasting, and supporting the business with financial insights to drive decision-making.
  4. Business Operations: Overseeing the financial aspects of the team's operations, which could include negotiating contracts, sponsorships, and other revenue-generating activities.

It's true that many executives in sports teams may come from legal backgrounds, but there's certainly room for those with finance expertise. The analytical and quantitative skills honed in finance are highly transferable and can be a strong asset in the business side of sports.

If you're passionate about sports and have a solid foundation in finance, networking within the industry and highlighting your relevant skills could open doors to opportunities. It's also beneficial to stay informed about the business dynamics of the sports industry and to possibly seek roles that combine your finance expertise with sports management.
