How Relevant is Excel?

Many of the resumes that I see my peers write mention some level of proficiency in Excel and my university even offers a credential/certificate but I'm wondering if I'll need to do something like that. I'm by no means handy with Excel and only know how to do a few basic things but do I need I need to become a full fledged expert? I get that Excel is a really useful tool but I don't find a lot of enjoyment in working with it and instead find it pretty tedious. Is Excel the top tool that I should learn or are there others, particularly for finance and investment banking?
