How to navigate this situation?

Hi monkeys I am in corp banking in this development program at a top 10. We have 2 senior level bankers leaving my market soon to accept different positions in the company. This leaves 2 open desks in my office, and i would really like to stay in this market while i can.

I have been in the program for 8 months after transitioning from another segment of the bank after a year. I believe i am ready to accept more responsibility and want to talk to my manager about covering for the bankers with the hope of a promotion if i perform well for the remainder of the year. I have been getting really good feedback and i think i know enough to move to the next level.

How do i approach this? Is it too soon?
