Investing like Buffet and Munger

For a long time I have been following Buffet and Munger's investment strategies and learning about how they invest. But what kind of company is Berkshire Hathaway? I would love to work in something similar but I wouldn't even know how to define that firm? Is it asset management? Is it a family office? Is it just a holding so a bunch of businesses together? It is not an hedge fund or a PE fund.

So, how would you define Berkshire Hathaway and what is the usual path to join that kind of company? Which are similar companies that follow similar strategies?

And why do most finance people strive to enter PE or VC or HF when Berkshire has consistently higher returns?
