The other road...into investment banking or investment management

Recently, I accepted an FMP role for a company most people recognize and have heard of (GE, Raytheon, J&J, etc...). However, my objective is to transition into either the IB or IM within two years, and in five years, head into a top MBA program. Within this time frame, I will be taking my CFA (level 1 this December) and my GMATs.

My question then is this: Is it possible to transition in either IB (BB or boutique) or IM after one year's worth of work experience in an FMP role, given that I have passed the CFA level 1 exam? If possible, would people be able to share their experiences?

FYI, I have prior internships in management consulting, equity research, and in structured finance.

Thanks.

from what i heard GE doesn't really like their FMP guys to leave for a top MBA etc..they would rather train the guys in-house, since ( in better times at least) most of them would enter hotter fields like IB after their MBA. is this true?

It is definitely true, at least from what the recruiters told me. I think the same can be said for other companies with similar FMP programs.
