Dude, wake up- you fell asleep at your desk! Privately invited to join a MF PE partner at his new firm… what are you talking about? Did you hit your head? You’re an intern lmfao. C’mon man let’s go hit Phebes. Ok yeah sick meet us there right after you finish resorting the VDR

Get the return offer, then make the jump. If anyone asks, tell them that you couldn’t pass up the opportunity, but emphasize that you still had the offer if you wanted. You CHOSE not to go back - and it could be a far better opportunity than a few years at the big name.

Forget "early" this man hasn't even hired a junior team yet. Say you're interested for now and would love to stay in touch once he gets the ball rolling -- not necessary to give a hard commit before he even incorporates the firm.

Should treat the decision of taking the internship like a FT role imo. Is there existential risk to his business? How is his business differentiated from all the competition? If it's just 1 MD leaving because he wants to make money doing the same playbook on his own, it's not worth the brandname risk imo unless you're getting some insane amount of carry (which, will you as a 1st year analyst)? Ppl shit on brand name a lot but brand name does go far, especially when starting your career
