Finance work abroad programs
Current ASO 2 (ignore title) at a MM PE firm. I have been working since graduating college, am mentally in a bad place due to severe burnout. I contemplate quitting every day but am not sure I even want to stay in PE.
Truthfully, I’ve never really taken significant PTO during my times in IB/PE and would love to explore the world for a bit if I find the courage to quit…and that got me wondering, does anybody know of any finance/general work abroad programs they can recommend? Think it’d be a good way to exit my current role, not be completely unemployed, and allow me to explore other countries.
Based on the highest ranked content on WSO, working abroad in finance can indeed be a transformative experience, both professionally and personally. It's not uncommon to hear about finance professionals seeking opportunities to work in different countries, as this can provide a fresh perspective on the industry, allow for cultural immersion, and offer a break from the high-pressure environment typical of investment banking and private equity sectors.
For someone in your position, contemplating a change due to burnout and a desire to explore the world, there are a few paths you might consider:
Overseas Graduate Hiring Programs: Some global financial institutions offer programs specifically designed to bring in talent from different regions. These can be a great way to transition into a finance role in a new country. While these are typically aimed at recent graduates, having a strong background in PE might make you an attractive candidate for certain roles.
Internal Transfers: If your current firm has offices abroad, an internal transfer could be a seamless way to work in a new country. This would allow you to maintain your employment status and benefits, while also giving you the change of scenery you're looking for.
Short-term Assignments or Projects: Look for opportunities to work on short-term projects in different countries. This could be a good way to "test the waters" without making a long-term commitment to moving abroad.
Finance Work Abroad Programs: While specific programs weren't mentioned in the context provided, there are organizations and platforms that facilitate work abroad opportunities in various sectors, including finance. Networking within your professional circles and on platforms like LinkedIn, or even reaching out to recruiters who specialize in international placements, could uncover some options.
Taking a Sabbatical: If quitting outright feels too drastic, and if your financial situation allows, you might consider negotiating a sabbatical with your current employer. This would give you the time off you need to recharge and explore, with the option to return to your role or the industry later on.
Remember, taking a break or seeking a change of pace is not uncommon in high-stress careers. It's important to prioritize your mental health and well-being. Exploring the world while still engaging in professional activities can provide a much-needed fresh perspective and potentially reignite your passion for your career.
