Ancetdotally I have seen many careers de-railed or ruined or fucked by going straight to PE and then burning out or being fired within 3 years

You're assuming people don't get burnt out in IB and won't get pushed out before reaching VP.
Many people think the lifestyle will be better which pushes the change. Burn out for both is possible. Wait till you realize it’s a grind everywhere and the market outside of high finance is utter trash for trash pay.
