Mid-career transition to PE in Singapore

Hi all, I would really like to get some advice on the likelihood and how to transition to PE in Singapore mid-career. I understand that this is difficult but I would really appreciate any advice and insights. It might not be a direct move to the PE deal team but are there any moves that will lateral me to the deal team eventually?

It seems that there are not a lot of hiring for post-MBAs in Singapore in the finance industry in general. Bulk of the hiring is still for undergraduate analyst level.

My background: studied finance in one of the local universities, did couple of internships in banks (but not IB/investment roles), and currently doing product management role at startup (5yoe)

Hey there! Transitioning to PE mid-career can indeed be challenging, but it's not impossible. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are a few insights:

  1. Timing and Opportunity: PE firms often look for post-MBA hires when there's a mid-senior role open, often due to promotions or departures. If you're lucky, you might find an opportunity when a fund is in need of a quick replacement.

  2. Experience: PE firms often look for candidates with banking experience, particularly from top firms like GS or MS. However, having experience in a startup could also be valuable, especially if the PE firm is interested in the tech sector.

  3. Networking: Networking is crucial in the finance industry. Try to connect with people in the industry, attend events, and make your intentions known. The WSO Networking Guide could be a great resource for this.

  4. Broaden Your Scope: If you're finding it hard to break into PE directly, you might want to consider related roles. For instance, many former bankers and PE professionals take corporate development roles at large companies. This could be a stepping stone to a PE role.

  5. International Opportunities: If opportunities in Singapore are limited, you might want to consider looking abroad. Some markets, such as South America and Africa, have lower entry barriers.

Remember, persistence is key. Keep honing your skills, expanding your network, and looking for opportunities. Good luck!
