Non-PE buyside internships in London

I graduated this summer and will join a BB for FT IB next year in London. Until then, I want to travel for maybe 2 months but also do some additional buyside internships in London.

I have done UMM and MF PE internships before, but wanted to explore other things and learn more about alternative careers.

I am interested in multiple fields so wanted to hear your recommendations on how to best navigate in the non-PE London internship market:

What industries would be good to explore, for example private credit / special sits, VC, or HF?

And which firms tend to hire off-cycle interns?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's great that you're looking to explore other areas in the finance industry. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Private Credit/Special Situations: This is a growing field and can provide a unique perspective on investing. You'll get to work on distressed debt, mezzanine financing, and other complex financial instruments.

  2. Venture Capital: If you're interested in startups and technology, this could be a great fit. You'll get to work closely with entrepreneurs and help them grow their businesses.

  3. Hedge Funds: This can be a highly rewarding field, both intellectually and financially. You'll get to work on a wide range of investment strategies and asset classes.

As for firms that hire off-cycle interns, it can vary widely. Some smaller firms or boutiques might be more open to it, especially if they don't have a formal internship program. I would suggest reaching out to firms you're interested in directly to inquire about potential opportunities. Remember, networking is key in this industry!

Lastly, don't forget to enjoy your travels! It's important to take some time for yourself before diving into your full-time role. Safe travels and best of luck with your career exploration!
