You probably won't be able to work at firm you reneged on and you may burn bridges with people at that firm. HH that covers the firm likely won't work with you again. Also, you may be viewed as a flight risk by other firms as they may wonder if you'd better deal them down the line. That said, if you think the benefits of the move outweigh the (fairly significant) consequences above then it might make sense. It can make sense in some cases but not a decision you should make flippantly as PE (and financial services in general) is a very small world.
