Securing a Private Equity Summer Shadow

I'm currently an undergraduate junior who has already accepted a summer internship at a F50 firm in a finance rotational type program. Last summer, I interned at a private lender (a firm whose name is pretty well recognized in its space) and am very interested in learning about how the investment processes work on the other side of the table (the private equity firms to whom we were providing leverage.) I vastly prefer to learn through experience, so I'm interested in potentially shadowing someone at a PE firm during the next summer (only for about a week.)

As there are few, if any, structured programs like this, I'm aware that I would have to network my way into a position like this. What I'm unsure about is how to approach current PE employees about creating an opportunity like this for myself. Should I simply reach out to people cold over LinkedIn, set up phone calls, and be straightforward with my proposal? Or is there a better way to go about it?
