Short stint in PortCo

Hi guys. I work at an operationally-intensive MM fund where I have a pretty good relationship with my MD and everyone is very chill about working habits generally. I’m wondering if given the unique macro environment, it would make sense for my career to ask if I can spend six months inside the most difficult PortCo? Suspect a learning opportunity like this only comes around every few years, curious to hear your thoughts especially for anyone who has made this transition.

This would be immensely valuable experience that would set you apart in the mid and long run if you went in with your eyes open to the fact that you know nothing, have the humility to do any task no matter how small, and are verbally adept enough to capably synthesize the learnings you do gain for the benefit of a future audience (investment professionals) who won't be familiar with what it's like in the trenches.

There's a superb thread from the past year where someone with the 2-and-2 profile was trying to decide on taking an operational role at a startup. Yes, a startup isn't a perfect comp, but the points I'm making above about the determinants of the value you'll get out of a role like this are highlighted really well. Especially in the comment that starts "I am the OP and will provide an update."

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.
