Transitioning to PE portfolio improvement from MF Portco exec role?

I am a VP of Strategy and M&A at a MF portco and I am looking for a new role.  I am looking at similar roles at other UMM/MF portcos, but I am also looking at portfolio improvement roles (like a KKR Capstone).

My background prior to portco was 5 years of PE DD consulting at T-2 firms and before that was a Director-level GM in industry for 5 years.

I have heard portfolio company improvement work is very interesting, the total comp is good and at my level there is some carry, but WLB is consistently awful and they are treated as second-class citizens.

For comparison, total comp at the portco as an exec is 50% or maybe 60% of the portfolio improvement roles, but we have profit interests, which can be $1.5-2M+ at exit at my level.

Do you guys have any experience with the portfolio ops teams or can you opine on if it is worth pursuing or is it just another 100-hour week salt mine and not worth the stress?
