Unpaid Freshman MM PE Internship for IB
Hi all, I’m currently an international student at a top semi-target in the UK and aim to break into Investment Banking through the SA route. I just finished first year and will be applying to Spring Weeks later this year. I am very grateful to have just received an offer to intern at a Middle Market (1bn+ USD invested) PE fund back in my home country. However, since their two intern classes are Post-MBA and just prior to joining MBA, they cannot list me as either and would be “unable to pay me a stipend”. They told me I would be put on a live transaction and would do the same work as the other interns which was highly reassuring. I wasn’t expecting anything apart from learning a lot and know that there are slim chances of me creating any value, but I’m still slightly disheartened. The commute is long and costs a decent amount. We didn’t set any clear hours yet but I will most likely be looking at 9-6/7 5x a week, on-site (what will I do ???). Since I’m really keen on getting some real deal experience and networking, I will go through with this. I wanted to know what people’s opinions are about this and if they think the internship will actually add value, assuming I walk away with solid learnings that I can talk about in interviews and add to my resume. I’d also really appreciate any tips on how to make the most of this opportunity as well as any tips people have for leveraging this for Spring Weeks/future Summer Internships!
