Asset Management vs Brokerage Financial analyst
I'm one year out of undergrad. I have offers to join a small (about 10 people) REPE shop in the NYC area with about $300MM AUM as an asset management analyst, or a mid-tier brokerage as a financial analyst for an investment sales group. I am torn between both, as I see pros and cons to going each way at this stage of my career.
On the asset management side, I'd be exposed to leasing and redevelopment projects around the country, get to spearhead working with brokers and contractors, and be involved in quarterly valuations and financial planning etc. The brokerage analyst role is for a pretty robust sales group of about 4 senior brokers and 6 or so associates. The job is mostly underwriting, creating BOV models, and putting together market research and comps for marketing books.
Long term I want to make it into a larger investment manager either on the asset management or acquisitions side. I am naturally drawn to the asset management role I have, but concerned if learning opportunities or growth at such a small company is realistic. I like the brokerage role for the multiple deals I'll work on every week, but afraid it will get repetitive quickly just making valuation models for the same type of middle market properties, and fear not expanding my skill set while there.
Really appreciate any advice or guidance. Last thing I want is to think the grass was greener elsewhere. Thanks.
