Hooking up with other brokers at different shops

Any of you have stories? Posting anonymously, but have gone to a few networking events and thought the girls are cute.

They're similar industry and obviously you'll probably cross paths eventually. But anyone have stories of going from work to personal? Curious how that goes because it may be strictly business at a real estate networking event, wasn't sure how follow up coffee or straight up drinks to make it more obvious has worked.

Especially if you're in the same market and industry.

Darcy and her husband. I don’t know the details of their relationship though.

‘avoid women at all costs’ could not be said much better. never mix work and play, it’s never worth it. Hitting on girls in any work environment can lead to harassment claims. this me2 movement is not a joke, girls are dangerous and nuts....

Agree until the last part of "all girls are dangerous and nuts", it's unfortunate that the loud few are categorized of representing the whole but that's also just life for ya... anyway as a female aiming for brokerage, my pov is it'd be a bit creepy if I'm just trying to network and build my business and then there's some random thirsty dude trying to make moves. Fat chance you'll just look like a tool. A woman is just trying to make a career as well and some may take deep offense if this happens (even though you had good intentions). Tbh you'd be hurting yourself and this only strengthens the case as to why the me2 movement has gained traction. Only if you were definitely certain there's mutual vibes then I'd say go for it but 95% of the time it's probably not.

Hope that makes sense

It basically boils down to some Future lyrics: “Chase a Cheque...”

If you’re at a work event, your focus should be on achieving work related goals. If you’re a broker at Cushman, grabbing coffee with the 9/10 leasing associate at Colliers does nothing for you. Go network with people who can become friends, mentors or benefit your career in some way. If you make friends (of any gender), you’ll meet girls along the way without trying

Realized that didn’t really answer your original question, so I’ll say if you met in a professional setting (not a happy hour) don’t get coffee expecting to make things romantic. The one thing that I could see as appropriate would be inviting her and her coworkers to a larger happy hour with your coworkers

Anyone have any stories.... seems like it's more advice to what he's asking. I could see it going terribly if you were at the same company, but otherwise not so much.

I used to work in southeast second-tier city and it seemed like brokers and all sorts of CRE types dated each other all the time and many even ended up marrying each other. I then moved to NYC and it seems like this activity is rare and most seem to want to keep personal life as far away from work life as possible.

Personally, I would advise caution, you don't want to get a reputation for the wrong reasons. I have know a few instances of people not getting jobs because of where their spouse worked (like at a competitor firm), this was specifically in the brokerage industry.

With all the ways to meet people, I'd play it safe. But I'm married, so really not the person to ask for dating advice, lol.
