How is a typical deal process run?

I've recently started the interviewing for new acquisition positions and was asked what my responsibilities as an analyst were during the deal process - however, in my year at my current firm, we have not made an actual run at any deals beyond preliminary screening. Further, I sometimes think that we have a unique underwriting process being a smaller boutique firm.

What are the typical responsibilities for an analyst and what type of workflows do you manage?
