Skills before starting full-time
Hey fellow monkeys, recently I accepted an asset management role and will be starting this summer. I really want to hit the ground running and perform extremely well. Is there any preparation that I can do in advance to ensure that I excel? We will have Argus/Excel training once I join and I know that we will also be going through some case studies. But if there is anything that I can do to put myself ahead of the game, I definitely would be willing to go above and beyond. Appreciate the help.
Depends. If you’re doing AM at a true PE fund a la Carlyle or Walton st. Capital, excel skills, hold/sell/refi, budget to actual variance analyses are the most important skills to learn.
For a more owner/operator type firm like Silverstein or Jamestown, brush up on your property accounting (lol), get used to managing legal docs, due diligence etc, sitting in on leasing calls
Just out of curiosity do you know this from experience?
From what it sounds like the place I am working at will involve a ton of hold/sell/refi analysis. Definitely some aspects of property accounting too but I feel that comes with any real estate asset management position.
