Taking organizations off resume and adding more skills + certifications?
Going to grad school in fall. Given I graduated from undergrad this January, is there any point in keeping my orgs on there until I join new ones at grad school if I have to keep my skills section to one line? The primary orgs I've been a part of are already on my resume as leadership experience, so there's only a few other ones on there I had minor roles in that are a little ambiguous and I can't really speak to in an interview.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it’s a smart move to prioritize quality over quantity on your resume, especially if you're heading to grad school soon. Here’s how you can approach this:
Remove Ambiguous or Minor Roles: If you can’t confidently speak about certain organizations or roles in an interview, it’s better to remove them. Recruiters value depth and impact over a laundry list of affiliations.
Expand Skills and Certifications: Use the freed-up space to highlight relevant skills and certifications. Tailor these to align with your grad school focus or future career goals. For example:
Keep Leadership Roles: Since your primary leadership experiences are already on your resume, ensure they remain prominent. These demonstrate initiative and responsibility, which are universally valued.
Focus on Relevance: Grad school is a fresh start, so your resume should reflect where you’re headed, not just where you’ve been. Highlight skills and experiences that align with your future aspirations.
By streamlining your resume and focusing on impactful skills and certifications, you’ll present a sharper, more targeted profile to recruiters and grad school networks.
