Who screens resumes / makes 1st round interview decisions?

Was wondering when applying for financial companies, who typically screens resumes and makes the decision on which candidate gets a 1st round interview or not? Is it typically HR / recruiters or someone on the team that you are applying for?

Thanks!

Depends on the size of the firm and if the group itself is running an internal process. Usually it’s a variable but safe to assume the following:

West coast: Internal process and the group will hold a round table. This is because west coast groups usually run leaner to east coast.

East coast: Middle market shops will similarly run internal processes and round tables. EBs / BBs will run a structured process through HR but it’s likely that to get an interview, you will need an internal flag / referral on your application.

The best case scenario for any bank you’re applying too is to just network internally within the firm

At Citi it's HR who shortlists and the team shortlists even further for first round

Lol that's swag as shit dude. You seriously get to pick out interviewees for the role as an intern? Is that like, some baller level intern shit?

No, I just asked my assigned buddy how the recruiting process worked when I was interning there and they told me that it's like this.

Damn dude, you have an assigned buddy at Citi?!?!?! How tf do I get one of those hahaha. I'm still in HS but it's crazy to me that Interns a few years older than me are already running point on HR Strategy for one of the most prestigious banks in the world. So crazy dude, keep killing it and I hope one day you'll pick my resume out of the stack!

Oh, no no, you misunderstand... I was just curious as to how my recruiting process worked behind the scenes, so I asked my buddy and he told me how it worked. Interns don't shortlist CVs lol. It goes HR shortlist then Analysts shortlist further for interview, conduct the interview, rank and forward to assessment centre, and then Seniors pick who they want.

"Buddies" are an Analyst that's assigned to you during your internship to help you settle in, ask questions to, and help you get a return offer. A friendly face at the bank during your time there, essentially.

I made £60 000 p.a. pro rata over 10 weeks. If you have more qs I can DM you if you want, more than happy to !

Wait also, really quick question b/c I don't know how to direct massage on this App. How much do you make an hour?

Highly dependent on firm. HR / people who chatted with you (usually a senior associate / VP vouching strongly can get you a 1st round interview, at least at most firms for summer associate roles).

Some firms do a HR screen for people they're considering on interviewing. These can be a silent ding if they do not go well.
