Are networks being over exposed?
During the last major economic crises there was no LinkedIn, no Facebook and certainly not many (if any) websites with a plethora of guides on how to network and now there is all of these utilities. Many students who don't come from a top 100 school with a 3.8+ are reliant upon the generosity of an alumna of their school to land them a job, and while I am sure many people are flattered for the first dozen emails there inevitably comes a point in which you can no longer assist those contacting you.
I've been thinking that barring a large economic boom period networks will begin becoming far too overexposed. Is this likely? If so what happens then, does college become absolutely useless?
First, from a purely numbers standpoint, I think you're overlooking the high level of turnover in the industry. There's always a new analyst, new associate, or freshly minted VP out there that might be willing to take a few calls.
Secondly, I think you're ignoring some key aspects of human nature. Some people like helping or at least the idea of helping people, or giving advice and having his/her opinion heard. I mean think about how WSO functions, lot's of advice is constantly being given. We're social by nature, and that characteristic might extend to building up large networks. Hell, I think networking is important beyond just landing that next position. I'm learning more and more that it pays to know someone.
Finally, I think you're overestimating the competition. I'm convinced that there are a lot of kids out there that are all talk and no go. As much as it's recommended on this site and in guides, I know for sure there's not enough kids networking and reaching out. You'll have qualified people that don't network, unqualified people that network but can't land shit b/c they don't have a good background, qualified kids that network but are don't have any social skills, etc. I think it's less common find than you'd think to have the right combination of intellect and background (stats.).
So no, I don't think networks will get 'burnt out'.
