Asking your current boss for an intro to a post-MBA job opportunity before leaving for an MBA

I'm about to finish my 2yr program and I won't be coming back (no mutual interest but on good terms w/ firm). I'm sector focused, and my boss knows the sector head at a similar firm that I'd like to work for post-MBA. So, I want to ask my boss to make an introduction for a networking call to express interest. Is asking for this a bad idea?

maybe I'm naive, but if your current fund doesn't want you, then won't that come up during a reference check between your boss and the connect?
