B-School - Recruiting for Multiple Industries

Hi Guys,

I'm headed to b-school in the fall and I'm trying to decide how to go about recruiting when I get there. I'm coming from an economic consulting background, and plan to switch into finance. I initially applied thinking I wanted to do investment management or buy-side research, and just took CFA L3 so hopefully that will legitimize the transition. But now I'm also starting to think seriously about banking and slightly less seriously about sell-side research.

Do any of you have experience recruiting for multiple industries during your MBA? Is this looked down upon - for example if a recruiter from a bank sees that I'm also a part of the investment management group, is that going to raise eyebrows? Do you need to fully commit to recruiting for banks to have a realistic shot at landing a banking internship? And what role do the second years play in the process? For example, I could imagine a second year who interned at a BB and secured a full-time offer, sort of acting as intelligence for the bank to determine who is totally commited to IB versus who is just casting a wide net.

It's tough because I think if I don't land a summer associate role at a bank, then I'll have no shot at a FT offer in banking. The same is probably true for IM, although maybe not...

Thanks for your advice!
