Besides M7 what other MBA programs are worth it?
Hey Y’all,
As the title says, what other schools have a solid program. For reference, I am Canadian who wants to move to the US. Unfortunately I didn’t have the best GPA in undergrad, a combo of undiagnosed ADHD and personal issues, destroyed my GPA during my first 2 years, but I was able to finish with a ~3.3 and squeeze my way into an IB gig.
But given GPA I don’t really have a shot at the M7 so which schools are worth it.
Cheers,
Fellow monkey
*M7 plz fix
Tuck, Yale SOM, NYU Stern, Michigan, Duke, Berkeley. I mean do your own research and learn about these schools, but good career outcomes are reasonable
Perfect, thank you!
Wait to see what you get on the GMAT/GRE before totally writing off an M7.
But if it's truly not in the cards, the other 8 schools in the T15 can deliver a ton of value.
This can also change depending on the career outcome you're chasing. From your post I'd gather this is not the case but for the sake of an example, Johnson and Stern punch well above their weight for IB recruiting and would be preferable to say Tuck despite being in the same tier in a vacuum.
What’s the ideal GMAT score for M7, I have heard of people with stellar GPAs, Stellar resumes, and they were rejected from them!
Anything above a school's published median score (some conversion between classic and focus gmat may be required) gives you a good shot, anything near or above their top 80% is ideal. For now this would be between a 730 and a 760 classic (685 - 735 focus) for an M7. Scores on the higher end can compensate for weaker parts of your profile.
This is especially true if you can tell a compelling story around your undergrad circumstances, if you could explain it to your current shop, you can probably explain it to the adcom.
Currently in this process. I have a gpa under a 3, did IB as well and not here bitching about my gpa on wso applying to M7s. Ngl bro you worry way too much about your gpa. This isn’t undergrad it’s an MBA. Stop worrying so much about your gpa when you haven’t even done the GMAT. It’s going to make you look weak. I say this sincerely. You’ve made your entire post about your gpa vs your story, experience, extracurricular, test scores - all in which a US mba values holistically. If your gpa is the only thing you’re worried about you’ve already failed my friend. At this rate you will not get into any school let alone a top 20.
Ahh I see, I’m guessing I’m looking at it from a Canadian perspective, here in Canada from what I heard and have been told, GPA is valued extremely high. For example Utoronto, has a hard cut off for 3.3 and average GMAT going in I believe is about 680. My plan has been to emphasise my work experiences (I was able to network my way, and out perform everyone across 6 internships in ER, M&A, Corp Dev and PE) and story. Additionally getting references from the meaningful connections I made at work and school. For example, my Uni has a world renowned finance prof who I became good friends with and I did well in his class. The president of a major MM M&A shop here in Canada became a mentor to me and a friend, so I was going to ask him for a reference. And another reference letter, which I assume should help.
Who told you UFT has a hard cut off of 3.3? They only look at your last year. Point is why are you so obsessed about your gpa? What did I say before - it’s an MBA - not medical school. There are people I’ve met not going to say there names but were ex fucking ballerina dancers in the MBA programs. You’re obsessed about the gpa. It doesn’t matter. Your test scores and work experience matter. The gpa is old news, as a matter of fact it matters only if you’re an American because it’s reported to the rankings.
But tbh man I don’t think you should apply this round. You haven’t done your gre/ gmat yet, you just started a new job it’ll look weird to apply right now. You’re telling me you’re at a solid MM M&A boutique but why is the president helping you and another kid? It sounds small. What impact have you done so far? You’re not ready, your mind is all over the gpa. You need to speak to an MBA consultant to help you understand why the MBA.there was another guy here who did the same thing as you and got rejected from all the top 15s for similar reasons. If your goal is to move to the US and MBA isn’t the only way to get you there - it’s an incredibly expensive and redundant way to do it if you already have finance/consulting work experience.
Are you currently at a big 5 with 3.3 in Canada? If you can pull that off which is almost impossible given how unforgiving Canada is with regards to GPA you can most definitely get into m7. If your undergrad didn’t provide a gpa on a 4.0 scale which many don’t in Canada, m7 will care more about your GMAT since your gpa won’t impact their GPA ranking of the admitted class profile.
Went to an m7. As others have said, the rest of your profile can easily make up for a low 3 GPA. If you are at a reputable IB shop, get a good GMAT and do some volunteering that ties into your story, you will have a shot at an M7.
It is one of the few programs that have an incredibly holistic admissions process. All schools in the top 10 and even top 15 are great (Duke/UVA/ UMich, etc) Good luck.
Perfect, thank you, I will look into volunteering programs for my situation, I know there are a few. Thank you again I truly appreciate it!
YALE SOM is probs going to be in M7 in 10 years easy. Plus Yale name
Just curious - displacing which school though?
