Best laptops for an MBA program
Hey guys,
I am about to start my MBA this fall and I was wondering if the community has any advice on what the best laptop for an incoming MBA student (concentration in fiance) would be? I personally like MacBooks, but the general consensus seems to be that one would be better off with a windows laptop. I don't want to drop 2k on a new X1 Carbon unless I really have to... Any advice on what laptop to choose?
Don’t have any specific recommendations but I’d look into getting a cheap Dell computer for excel and ppt stuff and an iPad for notes/internet/everything else.
Not sure specifically which laptop... probably would just do a google search and compare a few lists for a highly rated yet still affordable one.
I would say though, you should probably get something with windows as the OS. Especially if you are going into finance you will likely have a lot of excel work to do. This may not be an issue in grad school, but likely when you get a job the company would have use some version of windows. It’ll make the transition just easier and give you one less thing to worry about when you start.
only an intern in S&T here but I've been using Dell XPS 15 and it's phenomenal. extremely resilient machine for finance-related work. i had a macbook earlier as well and the shift has been spotless.
depends on policy at your school. ours mandated no laptops during class unless they were completely flat so almost everyone bought a microsoft surface
I just graduated from an MBA program with a finance concentration. I went with the cheapest Surface Pro for class/notes and then bought a ThinkPad e580 for the larger screen and 10-key. TBH it was probably overkill but it worked well.
I think you’d be good with a cheap 13” Dell / Lenovo and then save the 2k X1 purchase for after graduation. Buying a USB 10-key would probably be worth it though.
Lenovo X1 Carbon or Dell XPS 13.
The X1s go on sale all the time. I bought a 7th gen last November for ~$1200 with a 6 core i7, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd
don’t over think it. HP/dell/Lenovo/msft with extra screen and keyboard for homework/projects will be fine. you should be good with a 1,000-1500 budget. depends on what features you want (tablet, touch screen, 10key-13”v15”)
While we are on the subject, does anyone have other tech (or non-tech) purchases that they made that were beneficial for the program? For example, someone in the thread mentioned the value of the buying a 10-key USB for class.
external monitor(s), keyboard, mouse
airpods
True. I have found the external monitors I had purchased for my home office to be critical during the WFH period.
