Chances of M7--URM (LGBTQ)
Hello,
Looking at my current academic/likely professional profile and trying to gauge if an M7 is in reach should I apply in 5 or so years (after analyst stage). Here is my likely profile at time of application:
URM: Woman and gay Top undergrad business school (top 5ish, think UVA, UMich) GPA: 3.65 Finance concentration, S&T at top BB GMAT: haven't taken it yet, but expect high scores as I test very well (35 ACT) Unique extracurriculars: I am a mountain climber, triathlete, and marathoner. President of my b-school's LGBTQ student association
Any rec's on what I can do to strengthen my app? Is M-7 in reach with a top BB on my app?
“URM” typically refers to people who are black, Hispanic, or Native American. You may get a small boost from being a woman and gay, but it won’t be that much of a game changer.
Your profile looks solid like it will be solid - great UG stats and anticipated solid standardized tests.
Just 'years' of work won't get you into an M7 - look for opportunities to manage people, projects or budgets. Ask for stretch assignments. Seek opportunities across industries and geographies.
While your extracurriculars are interesting, they are very much self-serving. Look for opportunities to engage at work and in the https://stratusadmissionscounseling.com/getting-ready-for-an-mba-2017/</a">community in activities that align with your passions and interests . Perhaps your employer has an LGBTQ organization? If not, might you initiate some diversity/inclusion activities?
Make sure to do your homework on the schools. It is never too early to start. Sign up to get emails from the programs that are of interest to you. If work or play take you to the Bay Area, find time to visit Stanford and Haas. Similarly, if you are in Boston, get to MIT and HBS.
Good luck!
thanks! I have not thought about visiting yet so I will keep that in mind. I am hoping to serve in a leadership role at the bank's LGBTQ org, and possibly in their CSR initiatives as I have a minor in social work. I am also hoping to be a director of a national LGBTQ college student conference that I have been an attendee at in the past, and they take recent grads into their leadership roles.
Great! Are you involved with O4U? We have worked with numerous O4U alumni on their MBA applications! For now, your visits don't need to be formal.

I am involved in O4U, it honestly is the best weekend of my year. Changed my whole life perspective
yes this should be solid for M7 with H/S possible assuming GMAT is where it needs to be. A classmate of mine at the M7 I attended had a similar profile - S&T at a BB, woman (not gay or a URM), D1 athlete, strong gpa at a similarly ranked school, 730-750 GMAT.
how important is gpa vs. gmat? my weighted business school gpa is a 3.7, but cumulative (freshman-senior) is going to be around 3.65 by graduation (totally explainable bad semester year due to health emergency)

3.65 is more than fine if GMAT is where it needs to be
