Cornell Johnson's MBA program is a strong choice for pivoting into Investment Banking (IB). Here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Investment Banking Placement: Cornell Johnson has made IB a cornerstone of its program. In the 2019–2020 recruiting cycle, they placed 55-60 students into IB internships out of about 70 who pursued the IB track. Top firms like JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, and Barclays actively recruit from Johnson, offering structured processes and clear pathways into the industry.

  2. Alumni Network: The alumni network is robust and highly supportive. Alumni are known to emphasize collaboration and discourage cutthroat behavior during recruiting. This creates a strong sense of community and a reliable support system for students. Leveraging this network effectively can open doors to mentorship and high-level connections early in your career.

  3. Program Structure: The program is highly structured for IB recruiting. It includes detailed guidance on technical preparation, behavioral interviews, and networking strategies. However, this structure may feel intense, with students often doing 10-30 informational interviews weekly. If you're someone who thrives in a more entrepreneurial or less rigid environment, this could be a consideration.

  4. Comparison to Other Schools: While Cornell Johnson is excellent for IB, other top 15 programs like Darden, Duke, Tuck, and Yale also place well in IB and offer broader opportunities in consulting and tech. However, Johnson is noted for "outpunching" its rank in IB placements, making it a competitive choice.

  5. Location Advantage: While Ithaca isn't a financial hub, the program's strong ties to NYC banks ensure that students can access top opportunities. The proximity to NYC also allows for networking and coffee chats, which are critical for IB recruiting.

  6. Key Takeaway: If you're committed to IB, Cornell Johnson provides a well-defined path with excellent resources, a strong alumni network, and access to top firms. Be prepared for the intensity of the recruiting process, but know that the program is designed to set you up for success.

First of all, congrats on the acceptance!

Here is my take on Johnson:

Pros:

  • Very reputable program overall (name recognition, courses offered, IB immersion second semester, OE club for recruiting)
  • Tight-knit cohort (~300) combined with expansive broader Cornell alumni network
    • Everyone I've spoken with has reported Johnson alumni to be responsive and helpful
    • Lots of people recruit IB, so plenty of alumni scattered throughout the banks you'll be targeting
  • OE Club - provides a very structured approach to recruitment with frequent trips to the city to visit target banks

Overall a very strong school for banking especially in the T15 schools (and I believe only Ivy league in the T15?).

Considerations:

  • Location - for some people Ithaca is a dealbreaker, but hopefully if you applied and were accepted you don't mind this component.
  • If you are focused and work hard you will almost certainly get an IB job, but what IB job will you get:
    • This is the biggest difference I've seen comparing the schools known for banking recruitment
    • At Johnson you'll get BofA, Wells, RBC, Jeffries, maybe JPMC
    • At Johnson you may struggle recruiting for the top BB or EB (GS/MS/Evercore/PJT).
      • By no means a knock, just giving a realistic review

Hope this helps!
