Defer admissions at M7
Hello WallStreetOasis,
I got an acceptance at a non-H/W/S M7 school. Two questions:
- If I'm willing to pay a non-refundable deposit for the first year, what are my chances of deferring my admissions for **two **years?
- Is there ever a case that my acceptance will be **revoked **should I **ask **for a deferment? The last thing I want is to email them "May I please ask ..." and get back a reply "We have revoked your acceptance"
Background info: To start 2018, I aggressively explored multiple avenues to advance my career. This has resulted in two equally weighted outcomes: the above and a top trading gig. Ideally, I'll do the gig for two years and then business school.

I've never heard of a school revoking an acceptance if an applicant respectfully requests a deferral.
Deferrals are very difficult to get and rarely given. They bind the program and not the applicant. Schools know deferrals are usually used for shopping for higher ranked programs. I've never heard of a 2-year deferral (outside of deferred admissions programs like 2+2).
As long as you are courteous, there is no harm in trying, but it might be more effective to write an appreciative note explaining that you just got this dream trading gig and therefore regretfully decline their offer of acceptance at this time, but look forward to applying again as an even stronger candidate in two years.
A notch below 700 GMAT, 3.5 Top 10 US School, Math/Compsci. I think what got me in were: 6 years at 1b HF, allocation to my strat, research collaboration with Prof leading to journal submission, some magazine publications.
Then I would very respectfully request knowing that the odds of it being granted is low. Would it help if I make it clear that I won't be shopping? That's why I'm 100% okay putting down the nonrefundable deposit for the first year of study and even have them take my money if I choose not to attend.
A large, non-refundable deposit may help. But something that you wouldn't mind losing if you do ultimately go elsewhere won't have any impact.

Unlike those making the big bucks here, I think I would mind losing US$70,000. I'm only staking it because I for sure want to attend my dream school, only two years later.
