HELP! Imperial MSc Financial Technology for IBD
Hi,
I very recently got my full time IB offer rescinded due to economic uncertainty and the team having over hired which devastated me, so I have been considering doing a Masters to give me another shot at FT recruitment + boost resume.
I applied to Imperial's MFin (final round) but got rejected and they recommended the Fintech program. Is it worth it? What are placements like/street view for IBD in London/Europe/MidEast?
For more context, I have multiple IB internships, STEM degree from a reputable US university. Also havent had time to properly study for the GMAT given how late this all happened and the May 1st application deadlines for many programs. Any advice/insight is appreciated!
Issue is a lot of IBD internships require you to be applying in the year before you graduate i.e. penultimate year.
I don't know how you are going to be able to navigate that?
Lots of places are fine with final year students for summer analyst spots and if they aren't there are off-cycles specifically for final years.
Yeah they apply mainly to the few BBs that do that (GS, Citi, Barc, UBS if you excuse all the jokes)
None of the EBs do final year students (to my knowledge), and off-cycles are typically only done by people with solid SAs from BBs and very good EBs in my experience.
But then another issue is his course because it's not one of the better courses at the business school.
I've seen it done but not often.
Wrong. Plenty of EBs allow final years.
The only ones that come to mind are Raine for their SA. The others, I don't think so eg Laz, Evr, Moe, PJT, Roths, PWP, Q (they might do final years actually iirc), Greenhill.
Ik ppl who did SA or had offers for SA at Q, Roths (team dependent), Gugg, Jeffries, FTP, Raine, HL (if you count them as EB), PJT Rx (was '23 summer but still, I think its group dependent). Agree on Greenhill, PWP, Laz and Moe. I also know someone who was at Evr that said they would hire a final year for SA but they prefer penultimate.
Also for OP wasn't mentioned earlier but street/street+ paying MMs (Harris Williams, RJ, Lincoln, All Canadian Banks, All French Banks, Tech Boutiques etc) take final years for SA
I would be primarily doing FT or off-cycle internship recruitment along the year. I am just concerned how firms view this masters and how much of a "target" it is given Imperial's name but it not being their flagship program
In all honesty, give it a go because you never know. Just be wary that your ROI this recruitment season could vary from a few hits to absolutely all misses.
If I was you, I'd angle it to say that you're interested in FinTech / TMT / FIG and use that as an anchor but that's just my methodology.
And, as you guessed, it's not their flagship program so you're really going to have to sharpen the CV and application to make it stand out.
