How risky is it to apply to a brand new MSF program at a reputed University?

Hello Guys,

I was curious if applying to MSF at Texas A&M will be a good idea. I called them to ask about GMAT cut off and the lady said since its first batch they do not have any stats yet, which is understandable. But she said they have no information about the placements as well..I mean they should be having some plans right? Pls advice, what can be realistically expected out of this program? Any experiences with joining new MSF programs here ?

It all depends upon which firms are recruiting at the university. If firms you like recruit at the uni already, then the program is good. You may want to check up on that with A&M.

It's always risky to apply to a new program. But someone's gotta be first right? I would say there are few advantages and disadvantages to a new program.

Biggest Advantages:

1) likely not as difficult to get in

2) The program is going to take your feedback and place huge importance on it, since the program is new.

Biggest Disadvantages:

1) No prior employment/placement statistics- no reputation or "prestige" can make recruiting harder

2) No alums of your program to reach out to/network with - it'll be the undergrads and MBA alums you're reaching out to. They might not be as willing to help. (I doubt this, but it IS a possibility)

Wherever's there risk, there's return potential though. I think the experience will be largely what you make of it there- the professors and classmates you network with, how well you do in classes, and which employers you reach out to.

@ OttaReadMore, your .02 were insightful..thanks for the reply, everybody. I decided to pass.. I can wait for good school results this year and worst case retake GMAT and apply for next term.
