Investment Banking Class

I feel very fortunate that the b-school I am at offers an investment banking class, as that is what I would want to get into. However, I am unaware of how common it is amongst other b-schools.

Those of you that have graduated from b-schools and/or are attending b-school, is it common for an investment banking class (or some other variation of the class) to be offered? And if so, what areas did you cover?

I would say it depends on what they cover in your course. After 3 years of UG finance at my uni (one of the Cal Polys), most of the finance material is extremely quantitative in nature (they should call it quantitative finance), and fails to go over simple IB material. Most of our coursework is hand-on excel-oriented in nature (because of the schools "learn by doing" philosophy.

Just recently, the school started offering a valuation course, which from being in the class I can tell you is IB 101. Our book is written by the king (Damodaran), and covers a wide range of M&A topics, from the valuation phase, to the negotiation phase. There is whole chapters devoted to valuating firms based on their stage (high-growth, mature, negative earnings & high growth, etc). Essentially, every input in a simple DCF sheet is covered in detail.

I would say an IB class is very uncommon at a UG, and is only really covered in an MSF program, maybe an MBA program or two.

Hope this helped.
