Not at all. Unless he's now spit washing people's windshields at stoplights he can say "I was John's direct manager at F100 when he was a ____ and he did x, y & $13MM Z. Please feel free to contact me at _____ if you'd like to speak to me directly." They're not asking about him but about you.

Although he shouldn't be your only work reference. It may be tougher to get around not having another reference but I'm not a bschool guy, I'm thinking of it more from the pov of an employer.
