Master in Accounting, Valuation & Financial Management at SSE for IB in London?
Hi everyone,
I’ve been admitted to the MAVFM program at SSE. While the school is well known for its MIF program, it seems that only a limited number of MAVFM graduates transition into investment banking in London. I’m not sure whether this is due to lower interest among MAVFM students or if it reflects fewer opportunities compared to the MIF program.
One advantage is that the program is free, but given my goal of working in IB in London, does pursuing MAVFM still make sense? ( I don't know any Nordic languages)
At the same time, I currently have an internship at an MBB firm in a Tier 2 office, with a good chance of extending for a year. This would allow me to prepare for the GMAT and potentially apply to the MACFIN program at St. Gallen.
I would really appreciate any thoughts or advice on which path might be the better option.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:
MAVFM at SSE for IB in London: While SSE is highly regarded for its MIF program, the MAVFM program appears to have a more limited track record for placing graduates into investment banking roles in London. This could be due to either a lack of interest among MAVFM students or fewer opportunities compared to the MIF program. Additionally, not knowing any Nordic languages might limit your networking opportunities within the Nordic region, which could be a disadvantage if you aim to leverage SSE's alumni network.
Cost Advantage: The MAVFM program being free is a significant financial advantage. However, if your primary goal is to break into IB in London, you need to weigh this against the program's placement track record and your ability to network effectively.
MBB Internship and St. Gallen MACFIN: Extending your MBB internship for a year could be a strategic move. It would not only strengthen your resume but also give you time to prepare for the GMAT and apply to the MACFIN program at St. Gallen. St. Gallen has a strong reputation and better placement rates for IB roles in London, making it a potentially stronger option for your career goals.
Decision Factors:
Ultimately, your decision should align with your long-term career goals, financial situation, and willingness to invest time in preparing for a more competitive program like St. Gallen.
