Men and Women in BSchool- Two questions

For anyone in business school or who has friends in business school, I am interested in your answers to the following:

  1. Do you think women are at an avantange in terms of likelyhood of admission to the top programs due to their 'gender minority' status? Why/Why not?

  2. Are women in Bschool generally younger than the men when they begin their programs? (Recently read an article about how HBS and Wharton are admitting younger, less experienced women due to their biological clocks. I.e. women don't want to wait until they are 28/29 to go to bschool as it interferes with starting a family at a healthy age for her kids.)

Thanks!

  1. yes, but slight. Because the adcoms see a benefit in having a diverse student body...which means trying to get the female population closer to 40%+ of the class (I think HBS made a major push in this direction the last 2-3 years and Wharton has also trended that way) instead of 30-35% (i think it was closer to 1/3 of the class as little as 5-10yrs ago).

  2. yes, I think they are slightly younger (maybe by 1 yr on avg?) but i dont have the stats.

graduated wharton in May.

1) Anytime you are a minority applying to institutions that are keen on diversity you are at an advantage (to what extent is difficult to quantify)

2) B-schools compete with law schools and med schools, which generally do not focus on or require work experience so schools like HBS and Wharton are targeting younger candidates by reducing the focus on prior W/E. I view this as a negative because I think it dilutes the talent pool of experienced professionals and places "kids" in classrooms with nothing to share (i.e. relevant real world W/E).

All women really want to do is have kids and stay home anyway so Im not sure why they even bother going to b-school. Kidding, kind of. My buddies in b-school say the women are generally the same age. You have to remember the women who pursue b-school are generally on different career paths (ticking clocks) than the women who become teachers or are more focused on finding husbands...

Wharton still emphasizes prior work experience, but we did have some youngins in our class for sure. Avg age at wharton was slightly higher but I liked that because some of my classmates had really valuable experiences to share.
