PPE studies

Hi everyone,

I'm an High School senior and I'd like to work in IB or PE, in France it's time for seniors to choose where they'll go next year and I plan to apply to some PPE programs.

Do you know of people who broke into finance with PPE degrees, and what is your general opinion about it?

Thank you very much !

Based on the most helpful WSO content, PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) degrees can be a viable path into finance, including Investment Banking (IB) or Private Equity (PE), but it often depends on the specific school and how you leverage your degree. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. School Reputation Matters: If you're pursuing a PPE degree, attending a top-tier university is crucial. For example, PPE programs at institutions like Oxford or Sciences Po in France are highly regarded and can open doors to finance roles due to their strong alumni networks and brand recognition.

  2. Skill Development: PPE degrees provide a broad skill set, including critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and an understanding of economic systems, which are valuable in finance. However, you may need to supplement your studies with technical skills like financial modeling or accounting, which are not typically covered in PPE programs.

  3. Networking and Internships: Breaking into IB or PE often requires strong networking and relevant internships. Use your time during the PPE program to secure internships in finance, build relationships with professionals in the industry, and demonstrate your interest in the field.

  4. Postgraduate Options: Many individuals with non-finance undergraduate degrees, including PPE, pursue a Master's in Finance or an MBA to transition into finance roles. This can be a strategic move if you feel your undergraduate degree lacks the technical focus needed for IB or PE.

  5. Examples of Success: While not the most traditional route, there are examples of individuals with PPE degrees who have successfully entered finance. They often stand out due to their unique perspective and ability to think critically about complex problems.

If you're passionate about PPE and finance, go for it, but be proactive in gaining finance-specific skills and experiences to make yourself a competitive candidate. Good luck with your applications!
