Queen's or York

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum!

Here's my situation:

I have: -Only 3 years experience: 6 months in a startup, 30 in Eng, 0 in finance -I plan on being proactive to get as much as possible from either MBA program -I want a career in Finance (though exactly where Iâ€m not sure) -Accepted at Queenâ€s and Schulich ==> On the whole, placing more focus on post-MBA Career and Networking Opportunity, and perhaps a bit less focus on Content: which should I go to?

My take on it is that Queen's is highly reputable (according to Businessweek), and very selective. Its 12month window makes it a lot less expensive. (also I would start earlier, which is a plus for me) On the other hand Schulich is also well recognized (according to Forbes, and FT), but a tad less selective. 20 months of work means that it would have a higher opportunity cost, and I would end a year later.

With that in mind, here's what I'd like to know:

  1. How well is Queen's recognized in NYC? same question for Schulich (York) Any of you on the Street recognize both these names?

  2. The program I applied for was Schulichâ€s International MBA (Iâ€d like to work in Japan) From an employer's perspective (anyone reading this) Is this just as reputable as Schulichâ€s regular MBA? (both 20 months, IMBA has internship)

  3. With exactly ZERO experience in finance, can i really make it into IB at an associate level W/O internship? BB?

I realize I write a lot, I am very motivated to make the right decision here, and any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

The top MBA schools in Canada for IB are Rotman and Ivey, though Schulich is a great school and would likely be a better post than Queens at aiming towards any IB position.

In my opinion, Canadian MBA schools don't hold any "credibility" in NYC. What gets you to NYC (or the states in general) as a Canadian is work experience. The likelihood of getting hired out of any Canadian MBA is very unlikely.

My thought: go to Schulich and aim at a Canadian bank or boutique upon graduation.

When you talk about Canadian schools for IB, not a whole lot of deference shown in NYC. The only international degrees I've witnessed garner any attention, are Insead and LBS.

Sorry fella. Better stick with the advice provided in the aforementioned post.

So give up and go home?

Fine, assuming i took that advice, what options are available to me in TO? Can anyone speak to that?

Here are the top recruiters for Schulich MBA according to business week:

Top 15 Recruiters Names of the top 15 recruiting firms (i.e., hired the most number of graduates in past 12 months) and the number of full-time MBAs hired: CIBC Group of Companies hired 22 TD Bank Financial Group hired 21 RBC Financial Group hired 12 Deloitte & Deloitte Consulting hired 9 Scotia Bank Group hired 7 Telus hired 6 Ernst & Young hired 5 KPMG hired 4 CGI hired 4 Home Depot hired 4 Cap Gemini hired 4 IBM hired 4 L'Oreal hired 3 Pfizer hired 2 American Express hired 2

and here are the top recruiters for Queens MBA: RBC 3 Capital One 2 CIBC 2 IBM 2 TD 2 Telus 2

You can clearly see the differences in the finance recruitment at both these schools, however you still have to take into account the fact that Schulich is a much bigger program, it has alot more people than Queens at the MBA level so that has a little to do with it.

Also its not a good sign that for the top 15 recruiters for Queens...they only have 6 companies available.

Here are the links btw: http://www.businessweek.com/@@iWTv4oUQTNroBoA/bschools/06/full_time_pr… http://www.businessweek.com/@@iWTv4oUQTNroBoA/bschools/06/full_time_pr…

Good luck with your decisions.

thanks for the link sammy!

i dont think the rest of them were included cuz they had 1 student per (conjecture). it wouldn't make much sense otheriwse, as i seriously doubt only 6 companies EVER recruited queens grads last year...

that said, assuming the rest of the top 15 were filled with 1's, the placement %age would be comparable between queens and york

either way, I still am not getting a great premonition about my career prospects from here :(

1) You asked people their opinion on a canadian mba, they gave it to you...

2) They told you it's better to get work experience

move on...

"either way, I still am not getting a great premonition about my career prospects from here"

My comment was written in haste after reading the above, no harm intended in my post.

Das, if you dont like the thread, perhaps YOU should move on

I'm struggling between schools, they may not be top tier, and i may not be worthy of your time, but I still got a decision to make, now go post where your opinion matters

All: thanks for your help in this matter, I truly am taking your points into consideration!
