Should I cold email alums from my high school?

Currently networking for IB, went to a large public school and have a decent amount of bankers from my high school. Should I reach out to them even if they went to a different college? I heard applicants were reviewed by school teams, so would networking with people outside my college even do anything for EB/BB/MM IB?

Absolutely, reaching out to alumni from your high school is a smart move, even if they attended a different college. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s why and how it can work for you:

  1. Personal Connection Matters: Professionals often want to help those they can relate to. Sharing a high school alma mater can create a strong personal connection, even if you didn’t attend the same college. Mentioning this shared background in your outreach can increase your response rate significantly.

  2. Networking Beyond College: While applicants are often reviewed by school teams, networking with individuals outside your college can still be highly effective. Many professionals are willing to help if you approach them tactfully, even if they aren’t directly tied to your university. Building relationships with these individuals can lead to referrals or valuable advice.

  3. Target Analysts and Associates: Focus your efforts on analysts and associates, as they are closer to your age, more likely to have networked their way into the industry, and often have more time to help. They can also push your resume through the process effectively.

  4. Be Strategic in Your Outreach:

    • Keep your email short and to the point. Avoid long-winded stories.
    • Mention your shared high school connection early in the email to grab their attention.
    • Ask for advice or a quick chat about their experience, rather than directly asking for a job.
  5. Persistence and Follow-Ups: If you don’t hear back, don’t hesitate to send a polite follow-up email after a week. Limit follow-ups to three emails to avoid being overly persistent.

  6. Timing and Personalization: Send your emails at optimal times, such as mid-morning on a Tuesday, and tailor your subject line to stand out. For example, referencing your high school connection in the subject line can make your email more appealing.

Networking with high school alumni can be a valuable addition to your strategy for breaking into IB, especially if your college alumni network is limited. It’s all about leveraging every connection you have and building genuine relationships. Good luck!
