Singapore Management University As An International Student

Hi, I am an international student planning to study undergraduate in SMU but I still have some questions. First of all, can I land a job in IB or consulting in Singapore after graduating from SMU as an international. Also how recognized is SMU globally? I know it is impossible to work in wall street without attending a prestigious US uni but working in London or Dubai would also be pretty good. Thank you for your help :)

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Landing a Job in IB or Consulting in Singapore as an International Student:

    • Singapore has a competitive job market for investment banking (IB) and consulting roles, especially at the junior levels. There is an excess of candidates in Singapore, and firms tend to prioritize Singaporeans who studied in the US or UK for these roles. However, international students from SMU can still break into IB or consulting if they excel academically, network effectively, and secure relevant internships during their studies. Keep in mind that visa sponsorship might be a challenge, so it's crucial to stand out as a candidate.
  2. Global Recognition of SMU:

    • SMU is well-regarded in Singapore and has a strong reputation in Asia for business and finance-related programs. While it may not carry the same global prestige as top US or UK universities, it is recognized in the region and can serve as a solid platform for launching a career in Singapore or other parts of Asia. For roles in London or Dubai, you may face more competition from graduates of globally renowned institutions, but a strong profile and relevant experience can still make you a competitive candidate.
  3. Working in London or Dubai:

    • Transitioning to London or Dubai from SMU is possible, but it may require additional effort in terms of networking and gaining international exposure. Internships or exchange programs in these regions during your studies could significantly enhance your chances. Additionally, pursuing a master's degree at a globally recognized institution after SMU could further improve your prospects in these markets.

To maximize your chances, focus on building a strong resume with internships, extracurricular activities, and networking opportunities while at SMU.

Smu (and ntu and nus) students place fairly well in the singapore and hk markets for roles across ibd, s&t etc. Its uncommon for graduates in these schools to place outside of em asia straight out of school.  There are many who moved to ldn/ny via an internal transfer and even more (nus, ntu and smu graduates) in the past who attended the usual top US mba programs. However most of the folks who place well are singaporeans or permanent residents.

Your biggest obstacle when looking for a position in singapore after studying is that youre an international ie non singaporean non PR , which puts you way behind locals come employment time.

"International " - it really depends on which country youre from. Under the new compass employment framework in Singapore,  your country absolutely matters.  If youre from a country which is over-represented among the foreigner population in a company - for example if you are from the subcontinent- it makes it so much harder. However if youre able to have a special skill , if your parents are able to bring business to the investment bank/private bank, those kind of things really help tip the scale in your favour.
