transferring from johns hopkins to nyu stern
Hey everyone, I'm a current sophomore at Johns Hopkins. I just finished the recruiting process and was lucky enough to land a BB offer. I also recently got accepted to NYU Stern (applied just for fun lol). I'm wondering if anyone would recommend transferring to Stern. I've always wanted to experience college in NYC, so spending my last two years there would be a dream...
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transferring to NYU Stern could be a great move, especially if you're interested in finance and want to leverage the unparalleled networking opportunities in NYC. Stern has a strong reputation for investment banking placement, and being in the city provides direct access to firms, alumni, and events that can further boost your career prospects. However, there are a few factors to consider:
Cost: If transferring to Stern comes with a significant financial burden, weigh whether the benefits of being in NYC for two years outweigh the costs, especially since you've already secured a BB offer.
Current Position: Since you've already landed a BB offer, the immediate career advantage of transferring might be less critical. However, Stern's network and resources could still provide long-term benefits, especially if you're considering a pivot to private equity, asset management, or other competitive fields.
Cultural Fit: Stern's environment is highly pre-professional and finance-focused. If you're looking for a vibrant city experience and thrive in a competitive atmosphere, it could be a great fit. However, some students have noted that the intense focus on career outcomes can detract from the traditional "college experience."
Columbia and Cornell Waitlists: If you get off the waitlist at Columbia or Cornell, they could also be excellent options. Columbia offers a similar NYC experience with a broader liberal arts focus, while Cornell provides a more traditional campus environment with strong finance placement.
Ultimately, if experiencing NYC and accessing Stern's resources align with your personal and professional goals, transferring could be a fantastic opportunity. Just ensure the financial and cultural aspects align with what you're looking for in your final two years of college.
