University / School Ties

Hi Apes,

I was on call to a client yesterday, and eventually we jumped onto the topic of schooling. Being a video call, I could see what he was wearing from the waist up, and his tie caught my eye. He confirmed later on in his conversing of the old days, that this tie was one belonging to his university and that he wears it a lot. So I'm wondering, when is it acceptable to where your school tie? We're talking a client who probably went to university in the 60s for context.

See a part of me thinks you get away with this when you're aged and full of expertise, when you're making megabucks you can flex your school because you're a walking billboard for the success of the programme. Hell if you're drawing in the right money, you could wear a bow tie so why doesn't the same apply here? Another part of me thinks wearing a school or university tie as an analyst makes you look like a hardo, pretentious nerd in the same was putting BA or BSc after your name in emails looks stupid.

I went to a very good school, and then onto a good university - I've never worn any ties pertaining to those. I don't think I ever will. Would you?

Don’t think most ppl would even notice if it’s just the schools emblem/colors. Is it a bit gauche? maybe. but if you attended a top school it’s a potentially great conversation point for someone who asks abt it.
