US MBA Worth It? Special Situations / International from London

Hi, wanted to gauge whether the MBA would be useful in the future for someone who's interested in Special Situations and the prospect of moving to the US.

A1, currently based in London and received admission to one of the deferred MBA programs from a great school e.g. HBS 2+2, and have seen a number of PE guys go over to study at HSW.

Know some funds e.g. Elliott and Blantyre have historically taken people from MBAs, but has been several years so wanted to confirm whether this would worth the tuition / opportunity cost for someone interested in the space? Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing an MBA in your situation could be worth it, but it depends on several factors:

  1. Career Goals in Special Situations and PE: If your target funds (e.g., Elliott, Blantyre) have historically recruited from top MBA programs like HBS, and you see this as a viable pathway to break into or advance in the space, the MBA could be a strong move. However, it's worth confirming whether these funds still actively recruit from MBAs or if the trend has shifted.

  2. US Relocation: An MBA from a top US school like HBS can be a significant advantage for moving to the US, especially as an international candidate. It provides access to a strong alumni network, visa pathways, and recruiting opportunities that might not be as accessible otherwise.

  3. Opportunity Cost: The tuition and lost wages during the MBA are substantial. If you're already on a strong trajectory in London and can achieve your goals without the MBA, it might not be necessary. However, if the MBA opens doors that are otherwise inaccessible, the investment could pay off.

  4. Prestige and Networking: Attending a top-tier program like HBS offers unparalleled networking opportunities, which can be particularly valuable in niche fields like Special Situations. However, the prestige of the degree tends to wane after 5-10 years, with your accomplishments and experience taking precedence.

  5. Alternatives: Consider whether there are cheaper or more direct alternatives to achieve your goals, such as lateral moves within your current firm or targeted networking efforts.

In summary, if your goal is to break into Special Situations or PE in the US and the MBA provides a clear pathway to achieve this, it could be worth the cost. However, weigh the opportunity cost carefully and ensure that the MBA aligns with your long-term career aspirations.
