What could I do to help my chances?

State school for UG and Master's in Accounting GPA 4.0 1 year of work experience at Big 4. CPA and 1st level of CFA GMAT 725

When you go to state schools people flood into accounting because that is where the top recruiting for those schools are. I was wondering what I could do to help my chances in applying to top 10 business schools in hopes of changing career paths into finance (especially AM).

I don't really have an interesting story, I'm a normal kid who works hard and is very personable, but have never started a company or a library in Africa.

Thoughts on chances/necessary steps to make it?

Need more work experience for starters.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

i would suggest reading "my MBA game plan".

look into doing some interesting volunteer work in your spare time, something consistent with your story and brand.

good luck.

You may want to retake the GMAT. I've never heard of somebody with a 725 getting into a good school.

Hi Stevie

When aiming for top institutes abroad a score above 700 is advisable. However GMAT alone won’t determine your chances of admission; beyond the academics will also help you in determining your candidature and your work experience plays a vital role as well.

If you wish to apply to top business schools then one of the prerequisites is having significant work experience. Generally candidates have around 4-5 years of full time experience in spite of several term time projects or jobs; so you may be competing with other candidates who have 4-5 years of full time experience and have started significant initiatives at college.

Hence, we would advise you to gain some full time work experience before you decide to apply for an MBA. If you don’t wish to do so then, you could look at the HBS 2+2 program or the Yale Silver Scholars program.

I took it to get into my masters in accounting. When we reported our scores everyone used the 720 plus the analytic score. So 720 + 5/6.

i didn't want to jump to conclusion and call troll right away. this sounds like a perfectly reasonable explanation to me.

Put me down for 705.5 then.

So when people recommend 4 years before b-school, does that mean before they start or before they apply? Since round 1 applications are due around October, that means you basically apply a year before you start, so would that be 3 years before apply, 4 years before starting school, or does it mean 4 years before you apply, 5 before you start school?

Thanks.
