What to message someone I went to high school with who now works at bank I'm applying to

I just finished a Masters and applying for this one grad programme that I really want (the specific department). There is a guy I went to high school with who works at the bank, but not at the same department I don't think.

I got invited for and did an online assessment for this application a couple days ago. Firstly, is there any point messaging people on Linkedin at this point? And secondly, what do I even say to the guy? I'm bad at networking so looking for advice. Do I ask him for a call? Do I just ask him some stuff about the bank? Do I ask if he knows anyone in the department I've applied to, or would that come off as rude?
