Desk choice in S&T

Hi all, I’m interning in S&T this summer. I’m wondering how to rotate on a specific desk or type of desk (e.g. specifically rates). HR said we can only choose between sales, trading and research. Tried to reach out to S&T people at the firm through LinkedIn but no response yet. Any advice?

Based on the WSO Dataset, it's essential to be proactive and strategic about your desk choices during an S&T internship, especially when your options are categorized broadly into sales, trading, and research. Here are some steps you can take to increase your chances of rotating on a desk that aligns with your interests, such as rates:

  1. Leverage Your Network: Continue reaching out to people within the firm. Don’t be discouraged by a lack of initial responses. Follow up politely, and try to expand your network to include not just S&T professionals but also those in related areas who might provide introductions.

  2. Express Your Interests Clearly to HR: While HR mentioned that the choices are between sales, trading, and research, it's worthwhile to communicate your specific interest in rates. They might accommodate your request or guide you on how to get there during your internship.

  3. Utilize Any Formal Internship Events: Many firms offer networking events, talks, or mentorship opportunities during internships. Use these occasions to meet and express your interests to the trading desks you are interested in, specifically those dealing with rates.

  4. Be Flexible and Observant: Once you start your internship, be observant of the opportunities within each category. For instance, if placed in trading, identify if there are any projects or tasks related to rates and volunteer for those.

  5. Show Initiative and Eagerness to Learn: Demonstrating your enthusiasm for a specific area can make you a favorable candidate for rotation. Engage deeply with the work, ask insightful questions, and show your willingness to go above and beyond.

Remember, persistence and a clear expression of your career interests are key in navigating your internship effectively.
