What exactly is marketing & origination in commodities trading?

Hi everyone,

As the title suggests, I am rather confused about what marketing & origination is, in the context of commodities trading.

I understand that for originators, they "extend the reach of the trading desk" by being in touch with counter parties that are off-screen. I understand that this could include long-term products, swaps, cross-commodity deals and acquisitions. I see that often, marketing and origination is lumped in together, and I'm not really sure about what the job scope is and what this all entails. To me this sounds like what physical traders might engage in? Or is the job of the physical trader entirely different?

Thank you.
