Unpaid PWM Internship?
Hey Guys,
I got an offer to interview with a Bank of America Merrill Lynch Branch in San Francisco. The only dilemma is that its unpaid and I am out of state (I live in Texas). Do you guys think it would be worth it to do considering (if I get an offer of course) since this would be my first "finance related internship" (I am a incoming sophomore)? And if so should I actually stick with the SF one or find a BAML branch in Texas to do it?
Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated!

You will have to: -Find housing in SF or nearby -Get academic credit through your school or a community college (do the latter, it's cheaper) -Pay for all your food, clothes, etc. -Do all of the above just to have a finance internship only in name on your resume
Worth it? I don't think so.
You should really find a place closer to home so as to cut down on expenses unless you're made of money and none of the aforementioned applies to you.
PWM is a nice "placeholder" job, unpaid makes it rough and just depends on how much you personally have ($$$) to commit to it. I feel if you haven't traveled it's just a good experience overall and if you don't have any other opportunities it would be a good deal. I'd look out for closer things, like Houston etc.
How Long is the internship for ? ask them if they will cover expenses.
Sometimes bank will reimburse you for relocation. Ask them when you get an offer.
This is for summer 2013 by the way and just to clear any doubts I attend school in Texas (McCombs)
If it's for next year, you have time this upcoming school year to secure something closer to home and maybe even something better. Unless you don't believe in yourself then commit to this otherwise just pass it up and try to get something else for next summer.

If I get a PWM internship for the fall semester, how many days do you recommend I work? I have no classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, however, I don't think I should work three days unpaid. Also, I'm still an underclassman, so would you recommend I do this during the fall semester given that I'll probably be doing clerical work. The internship is at Merrill Lynch.
So, How many days should I work? How many hours each day should I work? If I want to get into trading, what jobs should I be trying to do?
Depends on how many credits you are taking and how many hours you feel comfortable working, unpaid. Personally, I would work no more than 10 hours.

Depends on how much you can handle. I did an off-cycle paid internship (wasn't much....$10 p/hr) while taking 20 credits. The internship counted as a class (4 credits). I had classed on Tu/Th and worked from 8-6 on Mon, Wed, Fri. It was a tough 15 weeks, but well worth it IMO. Just saying it can be done.
lol at the guy that says 9 hours is too much to handle (no offense). Im also working at UBS, 40 hours/wk unpaid, all summer.. . f'in brutal
I did MWF 9-5 at ML unpaid while taking full 15 credits. No cold calling for me. Probably shouldnt have worked so many hours a week.
I have a couple friends who work 40/week un-paid at UBS PWM. They say a good portion of their time is spent moving boxes from one office to another. Point is, you could have it much worse.

Currently interning at a Boutique PWM firm in San Francisco. It's my first internship and it's been sorta fun except the work I have done there has been a bit redundant. All I have done there is go on websites like CrunchBase and looked for leads and input them into their database. I'm trying to decide whether this is worth it as far as leading me into the finance world. Specifically, I'm aiming to become a financial analyst. In my last email, the executive assistant sent me an email asking if I could increase my hours in order to work on "bigger projects" with the CFO and partners. I can't tell if this is a trap to get me to come back this Fall. This is an unpaid position for the Fall that I'd do for 10 hrs a week and I'm going into my senior year.
